Comic Con Portugal is the first event in Portugal and the first Comic Con in the world to join the Sunflower network.
This year, Comic Con celebrates its 10th Birthday and joins the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. The Sunflower is a simple tool for someone to voluntarily share that they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent – and that they may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces.
Comic Con is a celebration of Pop Culture that brings fans and the community closer to this universe. It provides a space to connect to characters and universes, creating unique experiences and memories that enhance the perspective of seeing the world and ourselves. It is a four-day extravaganza of fun, participation, talks, costume, fantasy, tech, and more.
Visitors can wear the Sunflower to signal to staff, volunteers, and the general public that they may need additional support, understanding or more time.
Paulo Rocha Cardoso, CEO of Comic Con Portugal, said:
“This association with Sunflower is another big step in the history of Comic Con Portugal. As our mission is to organize an event that includes the entire public, it is vital that we create the best possible conditions so that everyone feels good and safe in our venue. We are proud to know that, in celebrating its ten years, Comic Con Portugal is a pioneer not only nationally, but internationally, with its affiliation with Sunflower.”
Paul White, CEO of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, said:
“We are excited to announce that Comic Con Portugal is the first in the world to become Sunflower-friendly. Visitors and exhibitors with non-visible disabilities can collect a free Sunflower lanyard when they arrive at the four-day event. Comic Con staff have had Hidden Disabilities Sunflower training to recognise Sunflower wearers with an offer of support, patience, extra time and understanding - demonstrating that Comic Con Portugal is committed to making an inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone.’
