Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) with Bethany and Hannah Keime

By Hidden Disabilities Sunflower The Sunflower Conversations Share

"So the Flash the Boobs campaign came along because, unfortunately, women are less likely to receive by standard intervention with either CPR or AED because of their breast. And we as women, we’re like, no way, we’re not standing for this, this is not okay.

And so they recently did studies, and it ranges from 27 to 35% women are less likely to receive help. And it shouldn’t be because they have breasts. The person has gone unconscious. That’s their life that you’re holding and that you could help save them."

Our guests are sisters Bethany and Hannah Keime, who have a condition called Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a disease of the heart muscle where the muscle wall of the heart becomes thickened.

Bethany and Hannah received a diagnosis in high school and have had to make significant changes to their lives and sporting passions. They have both been fitted with an implantable defibrillator, which saved Hannah's life when she fell into cardiac arrest while asleep in bed.

Together Bethany and Hannah have created a support charity called HEARTCHARGED to build a community for other young people with the same condition and needing a shoulder to lean on. They are committed to educating and raising the profile of this chronic illness and the importance of AEDs (defibrillators).

The conversations are with Sunflower wearers who share their lived experience of disability and who give a walkthrough of the ups and downs that are personal to them.

We also talk to healthcare professionals and charity experts who deliver an overview of specific disabilities and offer advice and signposting for support. If you are experiencing any issues discussed in this podcast, please contact your healthcare practitioner.
