Supporting travellers with non-apparent disabilities

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is delighted to welcome San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to the global Sunflower program.

SFO launched the Sunflower program on 2 March 2026, helping to create a more accessible, comfortable and inclusive airport experience for passengers with non-apparent disabilities, conditions or chronic illnesses.

The Sunflower is a discreet and voluntary way for people to indicate that they may need additional support, understanding or more time while traveling.

SFO’s trained staff recognize the Sunflower and understand that someone wearing it may need additional time, understanding or assistance.

“We are proud to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard program,” said Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet. “SFO is committed to making air travel more comfortable, accessible, and inclusive for all. Joining this global initiative helps ensure we can achieve that goal for travelers with hidden disabilities.”

Where to get a Sunflower lanyard

Free Sunflower lanyards are available from any SFO Information Desk on the Departures and Arrivals levels. Passengers do not need to provide proof or documentation of a disability to collect one.

Wearing the Sunflower is entirely voluntary. It does not provide expedited access or allow passengers to bypass security checks. It helps airport staff recognize that someone may need additional support, understanding or more time.

Passengers who require wheelchair assistance or other specific support should continue to arrange this directly with their airline before travelling.

Creating a more inclusive airport journey

By joining the Sunflower network, San Francisco International Airport is helping passengers with non-apparent disabilities feel recognized and supported throughout their journey.
