In October the Sunflower North America had the pleasure of working with Pamela Mertz, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) and serves as Special Projects Co-Chair. Pam helped develop the NSA’s “We Stutter @ Work” initiative. Pam joins us for an episode of the Sunflower Conversations podcast to give an insight to stuttering and discusses the theme for International Stuttering Awareness Day, which took place on 22 October, Be Seen, Be Heard.
The stereotypes associated with stuttering can often mean that a person that stutters is excluded, these barriers can affect self-worth. Be Seen, Be Heard seeks to challenge those stereotypes and encourage patience and acceptance to allow everyone to be their whole self. Pam explains that the neurodiverse condition isn’t a sign of intelligence but a disruption to how a person communicates, they know what they want to say but can experience a block or repetition.
