Governor Laura Kelly has officially proclaimed October 19-25, 2025 as Invisible disabilities awareness week' in Kansas. This recognition honors the millions of Kansans with conditions that are not immediately apparent but significantly affect their daily lives. Invisible, or “hidden,” disabilities can include neurological, cognitive, mental health, sensory, and chronic medical conditions. Though often unseen, their impact is deeply felt, from barriers in education and employment to challenges in accessing understanding and support.
“This proclamation validates the experiences of countless Kansans who live with conditions that are unseen but very real,” said Valarie Turner, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Ambassador and advocate. “Awareness helps shift the narrative from judgment to empathy, from invisibility to inclusion.”
Valarie, who advocates statewide for disability inclusion and visibility, encourages communities, educators, and organisations to participate by:
- Learning about invisible disabilities and their wide range of impacts
- Creating environments that prioritise accessibility, empathy, and understanding
- Listening to the lived experiences of people with hidden disabilities
- Airport staff have been trained to recognize the Sunflower lanyards and offer assistance in a variety of ways, including:
- Providing clear and concise directions
- Offering additional time during check-in, security screenings, or boarding
- Helping navigate the terminal
- Offering a quieter space to relax if needed

Join the movement
Awareness starts with recognition, and recognition starts with conversation. This October, Kansans are encouraged to wear Sunflower symbols, share stories, and amplify the message that not all disabilities are visible, but all deserve understanding and respect.
