Raising awareness of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental health condition that can affect how a person thinks, feels, and experiences the world. Experiences vary widely, and many people with schizophrenia live fulfilling and meaningful lives with the right support.
Many of the challenges people face are not caused solely by the condition itself, but by barriers in society such as stigma, discrimination, social exclusion, inaccessible services, and a lack of understanding. Removing these barriers and promoting compassionate, person-centred support can help people participate fully in their communities. Globally, schizophrenia affects around 24 million people. Every person’s experience is different, with their own strengths, goals, and support needs. Creating inclusive environments in workplaces, healthcare, education, and public life helps people thrive.
At the Sunflower, we’re proud to stand alongside people with schizophrenia, their families, and the wider community, helping to build greater awareness, understanding, and support.

World Schizophrenia Awareness Day takes place each year on 24 May. While this day plays an important role in promoting understanding and challenging stigma, our commitment to supporting people affected by schizophrenia goes beyond a single date.
Want to raise awareness across your organisation? We’ve created a schizophrenia Invisible Disabilities Index entry to build understanding, share lived experiences, and provide guidance on how to remove barriers, reduce stigma, and offer meaningful support.
