The Sheffield Giants American Football Team is delighted to announce that the Club has become a member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. They join many other high-profile organisations, aiming to raise awareness of disabilities and conditions that may not be immediately apparent. The Sunflower is a symbol that supporters with invisible disabilities can wear voluntarily as a lanyard, wristband, or pin badge. It indicates to staff and other match attendees that they may need additional support, understanding, or more time in public spaces.
During the 2024 season, the Giants' players, coaches, and support staff received training to learn more about the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, which helped embed the necessary behaviours to make fans at Giants games feel supported and receive assistance if needed.
The coaches and players know that American Football is a highly competitive and physically demanding sport. Whether you are a fan, a newcomer to playing the sport, or part of the coaching staff, if you choose to wear the Sunflower, your needs will be acknowledged by everyone at Giants.
As the Club builds on the initial rollout and prepares for the 2025 season, support and awareness of the Sunflower will continue to grow as it becomes incorporated into the recruitment and onboarding processes.
Although a person’s disability may not be immediately apparent, Club members can recognise and support fans wearing the Sunflower quickly and, if required, discretely.
Matt Flynn, Sheffield Giants Head Coach, said:
"Here at the Sheffield Giants, we are strong advocates of inclusivity and diversity. I was personally delighted to be able to help the Team join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network after both finding a lot of support in the Sunflower from my son, who is autistic and has ADHD, as well as after numerous conversations with fellow coaches, players, and fans who had felt welcomed and reassured having seen me at games and at practice with my wristband. Helping more and more people understand that not all disabilities are visible has been a very rewarding experience, and as part of the network now I feel like we are taking another important step in making this game accessible for all."
Paul White, CEO, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, added:
“Matt has used his family’s experiences with the Sunflower to advocate for people with invisible disabilities to feel welcomed and part of the Sheffield Giants community. Sunflower wearers visiting the Club will be met with an offer of support, understanding and kindness by the Team who have all taken the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to create an inclusive environment that is accessible to all.”
