To launch their support of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle, has worked in partnership with Carlisle College to produce artwork that will be installed in the centre to help raise awareness of the Sunflower.
Students at Carlisle College were given a brief to design a piece of art to help promote The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a globally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities, also known as hidden disabilities or invisible disabilities. Not all disabilities are visible, and people living with these often face barriers in their daily lives, including a lack of understanding and negative attitudes. So, some choose to wear the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to discreetly identify that they may need support, help, or just a little more time in shops, transport, or public spaces.
Susan Young, Centre Manager at The Lanes said:
“We are proud to support the Sunflower and hope that the introduction of this fantastic artwork helps continue to raise awareness of this initiative. It’s important to remember that if you see someone wearing the Sunflower logo, give them a little more space, a little more of your time and ask them if they need a little extra help."

On the brick wall is a big sign which say Proud to Support Sunflower for Individuals with Hidden Disabilities. Underneath is a very big drawing of two Sunflowers. Text reads: No two petals are the same, neither are two people.
Wendy Oxley, Carlisle College said:
“The opportunity to collaborate with industry on a live marketing brief has been inspirational on many levels. The students were given a brief with a tight perimeter, using the yellow sunflower, individually creating alternative designs to raise awareness. The students have approached this with sensitive consideration of accessibility issues which are not always immediately obvious.
It has highlighted to them that not only is it important to consider within their own working environment, but to be mindful, when necessary, within our community. The standard is great and the buzz in the studio has been fantastic!”
Sunflower lanyards are available for customers from the Centre Management Office, or customers can speak to a member of the Lanes team on the mall who will be able to assist.
