City of Fremantle launches the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is proud to welcome the City of Fremantle as the latest community to embrace the global initiative.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is an internationally recognised symbol that allows individuals with hidden disabilities to discreetly indicate they may need additional support, understanding, or patience. It can be worn as a lanyard, wristband, or badge, empowering individuals to navigate public spaces with greater confidence.

Over the coming months, the City will be rolling out the initiative across all its facilities. Staff will receive training to enhance their understanding of non-visible disabilities, ensuring Fremantle is a welcoming and inclusive place for all community members.

City of Fremantle, Access and Inclusion Officer, Courtney Rosato says:

The initiative provides a simple yet powerful way to foster understanding and create an environment where people with non-visible disabilities can feel seen, heard, and supported.
It’s more than just a symbol, it’s a tool for unlearning ableism, challenging preconceived notions, and creating spaces where everyone feels valued.
I’m proud to be part of this journey, helping lead the way to a more neuroaffirming and inclusive community, where differences are not just accepted but celebrated, and where we continuously strive to break down barriers and promote inclusion for all.

Hidden disabilities can be temporary, situational, or permanent. They may include neurological, cognitive, and neurodevelopmental conditions, as well as physical, visual, auditory, and sensory processing challenges. They also encompass chronic health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, chronic pain, and respiratory illnesses.

By joining the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, the City of Fremantle reinforces its commitment to inclusivity, ensuring everyone feels recognised and supported.
