Richard Luke from Scope and Karen Watson from Cerebral Palsy (CP) Adult Advice Service UK joined the podcast to answer many questions from the Sunflower community about CP.  Cerebral Palsy develops before, during or soon after birth, and in this conversation, we discuss the fundamental issue of NHS care after childhood, leaving a gaping void in ongoing support. Our episode also uncovers why CP, a complex condition, remains shrouded in misconceptions.

Richard and Karen share personal stories, shattering stereotypes and shedding light on the real experience of living with CP. They provide insight into the tools and techniques that can help manage challenges and societal attitudes toward disabilities. We explore the Gross Motor Function Classification System and its role in planning future support, alongside the significance of the Sunflower lanyard in aiding those with invisible disabilities.

Through heartfelt anecdotes, our guests highlight the power of connection and the impact of community support—vital aspects often missing from the lives of adults with CP. As we examine the gaps in healthcare, education, and employment, we also discuss the socioeconomic disparities within the CP community. This episode serves as a call to action, encouraging listeners to engage in advocacy and awareness-raising efforts to foster systemic change and ensure lifelong care for those living with cerebral palsy.

The Sunflower Conversations is a podcast that delves into different non-visible health conditions to enable the listener to learn more about the causes and symptoms and the physical and social impacts that can occur. The conversations are with Sunflower wearers who share their lived experience of disability and who give a walkthrough of the ups and downs that are personal to them.

We also talk to healthcare professionals and charity experts who deliver an overview of specific disabilities and offer advice and signposting for support. If you are experiencing any issues discussed in this podcast, please contact your healthcare practitioner.
