Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is delighted to welcome Bay Ferries Limited (BFL) and Northumberland Ferries Limited (NFL) to the global Sunflower network.
From July 8, 2026, travellers on The CAT, Fundy Rose and Northumberland Ferries services will be able to access the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, providing a simple, voluntary way for people with non-apparent disabilities to indicate that they may need additional support, understanding or time during their journey.
The Sunflower is a globally recognized symbol for non-apparent disabilities. By wearing a Sunflower lanyard, travellers can voluntarily share that they may need additional support, understanding or time while travelling.
Where to collect a Sunflower lanyard
Sunflower lanyards will be available free of charge at toll booths, terminal buildings and on board vessels across The CAT, Fundy Rose and Northumberland Ferries services.
As part of the launch, staff across terminals and vessels have completed Sunflower awareness training to help them recognize the Sunflower and respond appropriately when they see a traveller wearing it.
Supporting travellers with non-apparent disabilities
Jeff Joyce, General Manager of Northumberland Ferries, said:
"We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive experience for all our passengers. Through the Sunflower program, our team receives professional training and resources to better assist individuals with hidden disabilities who travel with us."
Jim Kerr, General Manager of Bay Ferries, commented:
"Travel should be welcoming, comfortable, and accessible for everyone. Bay Ferries is proud to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, giving travellers a discreet way to let us know they may need a little extra support during their journey. We want every customer to feel understood, respected, and supported throughout their travel experience."
Clare Kumar, Regional Director – Canada, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, shared:
"We are delighted to welcome Bay Ferries and Northumberland Ferries to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network. By recognizing the Sunflower and equipping their teams with the knowledge and confidence to offer support, they are helping to create a more inclusive travel experience where travellers with non-apparent disabilities feel understood and supported."
Creating a more inclusive travel experience
Travelling by ferry can involve busy terminals, queues, announcements and unfamiliar environments. By recognizing the Sunflower, Bay Ferries and Northumberland Ferries are helping to create a more welcoming and inclusive experience for travellers who may need additional support.
We look forward to working with them as they continue their commitment to making travel more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
