Hamburg Airport introduces the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to support relaxed travelling for people with non-visible impairments. The Sunflower is an internationally recognised symbol for invisible impairments. Its purpose is to foster understanding and patience in people around them. Hamburg Airport is issuing the Sunflower lanyard or pin badge for passengers with invisible disabilities. They are issued free of charge at the Hamburg Welcome Centre (public area) and at the Pier Information counter. Proof of disability isn't required.
Corinna Vogt, Head of Customer Services Passenger Management, said:
"All passengers should feel equally comfortable at Hamburg Airport. However, it can be a great challenge for people with a non-visible impairment to find their way around an airport. From baggage drop-off and boarding to boarding pass control - they are confronted with non-everyday situations everywhere in the presence of many people who are in a hurry,"
"With the sunflower, you can send a signal that there is an invisible impairment and that a little more time and understanding may be needed. This makes travelling easier. Our team is trained to react sensitively and provide support if necessary."
The offer is aimed at all passengers with a health impairment that is not recognisable to others with the naked eye. These include, for example, autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, visual and hearing impairments, as well as asthma and depression. The Sunflower is intended to help wearers feel comfortable in crowded places and experience more patience. However, they are not entitled to special services, Special Assistance must be pre-booked for specific requirements. The Sunflower can be worn permanently or as required by the wearer.
