Uniting LAC joins the Sunflower program!

We’re thrilled to welcome Uniting Local Area Coordination (LAC) to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program! As a Partner in the Community for the NDIS, Uniting LAC has completed Sunflower training, equipping their team with the tools and understanding to better support people with hidden disabilities.

Bek McAlister, Project Officer at Uniting LAC, is neurodiverse and a parent to two children with hidden disabilities. She said:

"Working at Uniting, we support others, and we welcome people exactly as they are. But what if you couldn’t tell from someone’s appearance that they might need your assistance? By taking the time to commit to understanding Hidden Disabilities through the Sunflower program, we can understand and service our customers better.”

Kelli Simmons, ILC Manager, added:

“The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program aligns with Uniting LAC’s commitment to diversity and great customer care. Our teams have undertaken the training with such enthusiasm, and becoming compliant is a strategic priority for our leaders. Inclusion and understanding are our aims and can only lead to better outcomes for our customers and the communities we serve.”

Courtney Whitton, Acting Digital Communications Project Officer, highlights the importance of awareness:

“As a mum to a child who lives with a disability that isn’t always obvious, I have become used to hearing comments like, ‘Oh he doesn’t look like it,’ from people in professional fields. It can be hard at times, navigating a world that isn’t always inclusive or knowledgeable about hidden disabilities. That’s why programs that help raise awareness are important.”

Thank you, Uniting LAC, for helping make the invisible visible and for your commitment to creating safer, more inclusive spaces for everyone.
